Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
