Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
